Summary0000433: Importing and scaling / rotating / positioning photographs
DescriptionIn version 2.76 it is posible to import picture files and place the image behind the chart drawing. I found this very usefull for determining the exact sky position of astrophotos that I have taken, and identifying the stars on the photo.

In v3.0.1.5 there is a similar feature when I press the "Change picture display" button, where I can sellect the path to a FITS file used as background picture. I can select a picture that I have taken myself, but the "show this picture" button cannot be sellected. This existing feature is maybe only intended for adjusting on a downloaded DSS image, but it would be very nice to also have the option to download and display my own photographs.

For such a feature to be usefull, one should be able to fine adjust the position, scaling and rotation of the chart relative to the image, as could be done with by ctrl-clicking in CDC-v2.76. Support for jpg would probably also be usefull for many users.

It might take much time to implement this feature. Of course you should judge priorities yourself...

Of course I do not need to download my own photos. What I meant was simply:
"... it would nice to also have the option to display my own photographs".

The alignment method used in 2.76 is very approximative because it only use two point without computing the centroid on the picture.
My goal is not to write an image processing software and there is a lot of such software that do a very good astrometric job.
If you process your image with a software that add standard FITS WCS information to the file after the astrometric reduction it will be placed on the chart the same way as the DSS images.
This is my preferred option at the moment but I keep your report open for a later review and also to remember me to add information about that in the documentation.

Revision 1931 make the program to accept any standard FITS image with WCS information.

The easier solution to make that is to upload the FITS file to Astrometry.net and get the calibrated file back:
