Summary 0000553: In texture, trying to apply phase with dynamc relief (simple or advanced), an error message and a shutdown follows
Description When trying to apply Kaguya Altimeter DEM (texture - phase with dynamic
relief - simple or advanced), the program bugs and I get the following error
message:

"File not open. Press OK to ignore and risk data corruption. Press cancel to
kill the program."

I have downloaded all the necessary files from the site. When installing the main program, it used the convert tool to convert picture files as I was installing already having the pro 4 VMA version (I have Ifran View on the program, maybe that was the reason).
Additional Information MS Windows XP Home SP 3, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+, 2,0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

Your configuration look fine and must not cause any problem.
The picture upgrade from v4 during install is normal and not related to the Kaguya DEM.
Can you try to reinstall the file bumpmap_kaguya.exe ?

Now I tried several times to download again the files (the folder ... textures/Bumpmap/ has 9 files: kaguya.txt; map1k.jpg; map2k.jpg; map4k.jpg; map8k.jpg; normal1k.jpg; normal2k.jpg; normal4k.jpg; normal8k.jpg).

When I had the "Full globe" feature on, I could switch to "texture - phase with dynamic relief - advanced", but soon as I switched into "Show phase" mode, the same error message reoccured (see above) and forced me to shut down the program.

Hi Timo,
I return to home and now I can reproduce your problem but only within a virtual machine, on the native computer it run without problem.
My problem is because the Virtualbox OpenGL driver report the full capacity of the graphic card but it limit the memory that can be used. So the program try to load the highest resolution map but there is not enough memory for that.

Please do the following to try to understand the root of the problem:
- from the program, Setup tab, click "OpenGL Info" button. On the "Maximum values" tab report me what is indicated for "Texture size"
- how much memory on your 9600 ?

To try to bypass the problem :
- Go to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\virtualmoon (you may need to configure Explorer to show hidden files)
- Edit the file vma.rc
- Change the line ForceBumpMapSize=0 by ForceBumpMapSize=1
- launch the program and activate the dynamic relief
- if this work try to increase the resolution :
  - quit the program
  - edit the file again and change ForceBumpMapSize=2
you can then try the values 4 and 8 and look at the result.

On my part I will try to intercept this exception and automatically decrease the resolution.

Hi Patrick,
- on "OpenGL Info" the texture size is 8192
- 512M DDR3 on the 9600

Editing the vma.rc with notepad, I could increase into 4 (with value 4 it took a bit longer to open but worked otherwise well). When trying with value 8, the original problem came back (see above) with the same error message and a crash.

It seems the visual effect of the DEM is very much dependent on settings of the Penumbra, Diffuse and also the Smoothness. One can significantly add the visual effect by controlling those sliders, especially Penumbra.

Thanks for help!
Be well!

... just wanted to add: with the dynamic relief now working, the effect is pretty COOL (putting the Lunar rotating globe mode on, and into faster rotation e.g. 10 degrees per second and increasing the Orbital altitude into e.g. 1315 km)!

Nice this work!

I still not understand the problem as the 8k texture require 256MB of memory it should load into your card.

I have changed the code to retry with half resolution until it work. The program now give information about the resolution it loaded.
I close the problem now but you can reopen if there is still problem after I make the testing version available.

Penumbra as most effect if you choose the Simple method, Advanced is much less sensitive to this effect.
Smoothness as only a geometric effect as it represent the size of the triangles used to approximate the sphere. Use the highest value that give reasonable refresh rate.

Yes the effect is cool! even this is not real shadow it give something near realistic.
