Summary0001492: Artificial satellites update require Wine
DescriptionArtificial satellites update require Wine on linux. I understand that you using external win/dos application/parser, however Wine is something I'm not particularly happy to install and perhaps others do not prefer to use it at all.

Is it possible to make your own replacement in the future for "Artificial satellites update" feature?

Yes, this is possible and maybe not too difficult as SPG4 in available in Pascal.

I can do that for a future version, it's only a question of free time and priority.

At this occasion look to add the satellites to the advanced search.
Maybe this open a list with the next pass for this satellite.

Do you think using dosbox instead of wine is sufficient as temp solution?
I do not have hex viewer here to examine exe headers...

Wine is far too large ballast and hard to remove as well...

Unfortunately not, because quicksat is a 32bit program.
If you try it show "Require Win32" error message.

Few months ago, I have started implementation of SPG4 in free time with my own project, in order to make something similar to www.n2yo.com. Full implementation is nearly finished.

Computation is quite optimized and practically is possible to calculate in real time position of all currently actively tracked satellites and rocket debris, for which is available TLE.

Portion of this may be as well used in CDC to track and predict position of any satellite, particularly LEO, including precise auto-tracking by telescope, photographing or filming, all in real time.

I hope I will soon publish this on SourceForge.

Very nice Sasa!
I can start integration in CdC after you publish your project.

Any progress here?
I'm very interested in this, because I actually had to remove this functionality from Fedora RPMs (no pre-built software allowed). If you can substitute quicksat and iridflare with a new tool would be great.

Just in case Sasa's project development is dead, I want to report the notice that the artificial satellites calculation code from Project's Pluto Guide 9 has been released as GPL, so maybe it can be useful for integration in CDC: https://www.projectpluto.com/sat_code.htm

Mattia,

Unfortunately, I had no time to work on any personal project these few months...

However, all is almost finished and fully functional, only some extra functionality and some tweaks are left to be done in library and demo. Demo I have so far is for windows and linux (ubuntu deb) and if you are interested in testing it and comments/suggestions, that would be great help to finish all.

Speed in attached screenshots is measured on a very old and slow PC - for any modern (few years old) PC it is 8 - 10x faster.

I may send you both files by email so far, if you are interested.

Sasa, nice work. I'm using Fedora and I will be happy to include it in official repos and maybe in Astronomy spin when you publish the code.

I would appreciate if anyone is interested in this to test and make any comment and suggestion...

It was long time passed, but I had no time to work on any personal projects so far. Now I have much more free time and I will finish all I planed very fast, but still I need some assistance, as it is always much better is there is more people to test and suggest, than programmer itself.

Yes I am still very interested to test and make integration in CdC.

If you want more people to test the best way is to make a beta release available somewhere (SF, Github, ...) and make some publicity.

Thank you Patrick. I hope you do not mind to contact you via e-mail, as I'm not ready yet to publish this.

One more thing, regarding to this report:
https://spacenews.com/iridium-ends-legacy-satellite-service-switches-all-traffic-to-next-fleet/

According to this, NEXT generation become fully deployed and operational and they started to de-orbiting old fleet, which will be history very soon. That makes all a bit easier, since Iridium flare calculation will not be needed anymore.

No problem, I wait your email.

Yes the predictable Iridium flare will soon be something of the past.
Anyway I plan to keep the current flare calculation in 4.2 but remove it for 4.4.

Thank you, but I have not received anything. Maybe it is some delay or other issue. Can you resend it?
