DescriptionHello,
in most cases autofocus works fine for me. But sometimes it works poor under some circumstances. The curve fitting, focuser control and backlash compensation work perfect. I see some major improvements in the star detection.

Tonight there are bad conditions for autofocus and I do not know why. I am shooting through a narrowband OIII Filter, ok image is dim. But when I see enought stars on the screen why does CCDCiel does not? Maybe a user failure.

I had to exceed exposure time to 12s to finally get autofocus work. In my logfile (line63) it is stated that only 2 stars are used. I attached that file as fits. I clearly see much stars.

Are my settings wrong?

I quickly look at the FITS file, the stars are very small probably because of the sampling of 3.6"/px.
The "Image inspection" button detect 10x more stars if in Preferences / Focus the option "System is undersampled, accept 1 pixel star" is checked.
With this option you must be sure to have a good bad pixel map or a good dark loaded in CCdciel to prevent to focus on hot pixel.

Can you try with this option if you have the time tonight?

It shall be clear tomorrow, I will take a dark and use it as bad pixel map and retry

The image inspection function detect even more stars than autofocus when "System is undersampled, accept 1 pixel star" is not checked.

Autofocus use only the stars near the image center and your image has very few stars in this area. We not want to focus with star in the image corner.

Also when the image is defocused to measure the curve, the fainter stars may get a too low SNR to be taken into account. This is because we not just need to "see" the stars but we need to measure their diameter at half flux with a good confidence.
I am interested if you can also save a FITS image of the defocused field in the same condition it use for the first point in the curve.

Thanks for your fast reply. It helped me much. Now I took the slowest methode, 1x1bin and 12s exposure. Than much more stars were recognized as stars and autofocus is much more reliable. Important were I go asleep.

Your FITS file is very interesting because it is just at the limit of undersampling but not really undersampled.
I make a change to the program to accept more real star in the image and still reject hot pixel.

You can probably autofocus successfully in bin 2x2 with this version.

The area stars are taken for autofocus is the square that contain the larger bull eye circle. For a quick check you can just count stars inside the bull eye.

Forget to say: with this new version be sure to disable "System is undersampled, accept 1 pixel star" so hot pixel are rejected.

This is very good news!
Sure this will be in next version, probably soon.

The log show that many stars are used at every step of the focusing and the curve is nice.

In the out of focus frame the star SNR is low. The star detection and radius computation is still good but you must be careful to no more defocus and not use shorter exposure time.

Just for info. Yesterday I got my ASI183 back from china, it has a thermal malfunction and has to be repaired. With this camera autofocus is fun. Also the test version which I got from you works fine too.

No, this was with a RED filter and should not compare with my Moravian CCD. Besides it was with another scope!!! It should demonstrate, that the new focus improvement does not harm with cameras with a greater resolution and how fast it can be. Really great.
Sorry both equipments cannot compared, sorry.
After all, the performance of the ASI183 is unbelievable.

Yes that correct, I visited the "Deepsky Tagung". I have been there twice with an astroclub member of the Bonner Verein. :) I was living near Bonn in those years. Now I'm back in the Netherlands.

With my question regarding the camera, I was as trying to understand if your problem was a rare case or something which should be addressed in the program code. It should have no unforeseen side effects.

sorry I was not able to test it with the Moravian . This is the last clear night and I use two scopes in the moment. My other Laptop is windows and I was not able to get the filter names of my moravian filterwheel in CCDCiel....an other story.

I have tested your new version with the ASI183 but I cannot really say that there is an distinct improvement, maybe slightly.

A comparison is not easy. The log of a autofocus yesterday and now is not much different.
The sceenshoot shows a H-Alpha frame at the begin of the dynamic curve (focuser max out). Only one star is recognized, this is harmful.

Hello Thomas,

The focuser reaches a HFD of 16.4. With the relative weak H-alpha signal this is too far from the focus position at around 4.1 and I would reduce the step size such that you reach a HFD of maybe twice the minimum so 9. The step size is 120, so I would reduce it to 60 or 80.

The dynamic focus method doesn't need to be in the linear range. It can work in the low range of the focus curve which is an advantage for focusing using small band filters.

Reaching a HFD of 16.4, the SNR signal is still very good at 215. Is the minimum SNR set correctly? I can't look to my settings but a setting between 5 or 10 will fine. See attached screenshot:

Thank you for the test Thomas.

The change Han make to the code make it safer for other kind of images with different sensor noise. I want your testing only to be sure there is no regression with your camera. But I am really confident it will work because of the many test we do with the images you provide.

About the single star detected on the Ha image, can you look at the Preferences/Focus what is the value for "Star detection window size".
From this screenshot but also the small number of star show at start and end with the blue filter, I suspect it is too small.
The value is set for bin 1x1 and is adjusted for current binning so it not need to be changed when binning change.
The star HFD is 17 at bin 2x2, this make 34 at bin 1x1, so the value must be at least 60 preferably 80.

If you load such a defocused image in ccdciel you can try to adjust this parameter and use the button "Image inspection" to see the change in the star detection.

I had a look to my setup. I have put the minimum SNR at 6. For H-alpha I set the exposure time at 7 seconds. The SNR's I see while focusing are varying a lot but with the H-alpha in place I see SNR values between 15 and 200. So lower then your SNR values which vary between 206 and 274 . But you exposure time is already as short as 3 seconds and I would not reduce that since shorter exposure time will introduce more variation in the HFD due to seeing effects.

So reducing the focusser stepsize and checking the minimum SNR setting should fix your problem.

thanks for all your effort.

Tonight, before your answers came, autofocus failed with filter green. I instinctively did what you suggest. I reduced the step-size a little bit (from 120 to110) and it worked better. Fortunately CCDCiel saves focus_fail images.

I loaded that image in ccdciel and pressed image inspection. Only two stars were found (StarInspection of failed focus image 2020-03-29 12-20-08). Autofocus found none tonight and breaks away. In the log (StepSize reduced.txt) you see both focus attempt with 120 and 110 step size. I am asking me, why are the two central stars of that image not recognized as stars? Maybe because they are rings caused by my diagonal mirror?

As attachment my recent settings. Are there any faults?

At monday or tuesday there is the chance of getting clear here.

I am at a window size of 250px at the moment. I did not know that these parameters are used for ImageInspection also. If I vary image inspection window from 60 to 250 with the focus fail file I got weired results.

250 is probably too much for the star detection window, a too big value may make some stars to be rejected because another nearby star make perturbation to the measurement.

I make some test and yes the new rejection for hot pixel is responsible for not using more stars because of the star ring.
We tested that a least 3 pixel are above noise near the star center, this is not the case in your image because the ring is well defined.

By removing the test with distance_histogram[1]<3 I get more stars as show in the screenshot.

We see there is now one hot pixel wrongly selected because of the removal of the test.
There is also two portion of star ring that give wrong value of 5.7 and 3.9. This is because the Auto-focus "Min-SNR" value was 7 in my setting, changing it to 16 remove this two wrong value and also the hot pixel.
Maybe this is the way to go?

Patrick is correct that the hot pixel detection fails here since there are no pixels illuminated in the center due to the donut star shape. So it doesn't work in CCDCiel.

The de-focused stars are still very large (total diameter 30 pixels) and the illuminated pixels rise just above 3*noise level even with a SNR of 120. All focus problems will be solved if you reduce the step size from 120 to 60 or 80 and defocus up to HFD 9 only. This will increase the signal for each illuminated pixel with a factor 4.

I agree that an SNR of 16 gives better result to filter out some hot pixels/false detection's. Maybe it is better to increase the default SNR value which if i'm correct at 5.

You need a CCDCiel version without the introduced hotpixel detection since that doesn't work for the donut shaped stars. If Patrick doesn't issue an update, you better use an older version which shows 4 or 5 star detections in your image:

The higher SNR limit is probably valid for CMOS but with my CCD it work best between 3 and 5.

The ideal solution is if we find a way to estimate the best value part of the focuser calibration procedure.
Maybe when at a medium defocused position we can vary this value to minimize the HFD dispersion but still get the most star as possible.

I am testing 0.9.70-2165 in the moment and I can say it works quite good. I commented the logfile e.g what filter was used.
The profile change error is not tested at the moment.

I have another wish. The user cannot see or control the window in which autofocus is working. Can you draw a rectangle on the screen while autofocus is running. I've got a 12" Newton with a big 120cm diagonal and a good coma corrector. To increase this autofocus field can be done without any problems.

I recorded my screen during autofocus with the red filter.

Hi Thomas,

It can be interesting to see the FITS file corresponding to the 21:19:20 and 21:20:13 screenshot to see why the star left of the galaxy center is not selected. This is the only one that can reasonably be added in this images without extending the search area.

Otherwise from the log the big difference with the different filter is the peak intensity on the first defocused position and the relation with the number of star:
step 80:
B: peak=3664 nstar=13
OIII: peak=1356 nstar=2
step 120:
OIII: peak=1136 nstar=2
L: peak=12052 nstar=17

On the previous focus_fail image of the same area the background level is at 688, this make the OIII maximum star intensity only 668 and 448 above the background.
This let me think the OIII filter exposure factor is set too low, by doubling the exposure time and use step=80 you can probably get 6-10 stars.

The square of the search area is two third of the image height. I think this is good for square or 4/3 sensor format, but with the wider 3/2 imx183 this make the search area too small.
I can make a change to use the full sensor height for sensor wider than 4/3.
I can also add an option to use the full sensor area when the optic allow that.

You must disable all this debug information send by INDI, this is to debug the driver themselves and even in this case this must not be send to CCDciel because this can impact the performance.

To disable the debug, start the INDI server, open the INDI client from Indistarter or CCDciel.
For each driver, at the Option tab uncheck "Driver Debug" in both "Debug level" and "Logging level". Then click Disable on the Debug row.
Finally click Save on the Configuration row.

Then stop and restart the INDI server, look at each Option tab that Debug is still Disable.

One point more about the star intensity.
A level of 448 above the background can look good.
But we must remember this camera use 12 bit ADC, this make the full ADU range from 0 to 4096, then the driver multiply each value by 16 to go in 0-65535 range.
So the real ADU of the maximum intensity in this image is 448/16 = 28.

Can you edit the file ~/.indi/EQMod\ Mount_config.xml when INDI is not running.

You must see :

The change in 2.2 is the option to connect to the device as soon the server is started. Do you check this auto-connect column?

To be sure you can try the following, start the server from the command line:

Start CCDciel, select the menu Edit / INDI setting, and look for the Debug value.

I can say that I am very satisfied with the current version. The expanded field covers much more stars. There are screenshoots and a focus file.

Hello Patrick,
tonight I am testing version 0.9.70-2168. With my equipment autofocus with the expanded field is good. I am satisfied.
I attached a focus file. It is the file before 1.png. Sorry I cannot save so quick. There are to bright stars in the upper right, which were not detected most of the autofocus process. Strange, the last point of the curve (most defocused) the star is recognized (see 2.png). In the final image (3.png) the two stars are not recognized again. If I press image inspection, they will.

Thank you Thomas for this new test ad the clear explanation.

I do many test with your image focus.fits this morning and find why in some case the two bright stars in upper right are rejected.
The problem is because of the asymmetry of the star image as show in attached screenshot.
When the detection is done using the stored central position there is too much bright pixel out of the measurement window that prevent precise HFD measurement and make the star to be rejected. ( for Han: test ri>=rs at cu_fits.pas line 2723)

This can be solved by adding a small margin to the computed measurement window.

Apparently "Image measurement" is not affected by this problem because of the way it scan the image with overlap between pass.

I had a look to the two stars. The star profile is indeed a little strange. The base is faint but wide. The star radius ri is measured for both stars 5, so a diameter of 10. The actual base is wider up to 15 pixels but there is not much flux in the outer regions. At the moment I have no idea if this is caused by the seeing or the optics.

I'm considering several other options to detect them.

1) Exporting the ri from TFits.GetHFD2 is one possibility but it measures 5 so that doesn't work since it should be 7 or 8.
2) Experiment with the drop-off detection in TFits.GetHFD2
3) Your s:=s+4
4) Change line 620:
- s:=min(max(12,round(2.5*med)),s); {reasonable window to measure this star}
+ s:=min(max(14,round(3.0*med)),s); {reasonable window to measure this star}

The HFD of the two stars is 3.5 and 3.8. So only the boxsize of 14 probably will fix it.

For ASTAP, I also have this 14 as default box size. Does this 14 result in detecting these two stars in the focus routine?
Tomorrow I will have an other look.

Looking to the screenshot, the stars are not round. As Thomas described the two stars where not detected at most of focusers steps. This indicates the problem is not cause by the seeing but by the unroudness of the stars. Only increasing the detection box over the whole range will fix it. So the factor 2,5 is too tight and didn't consider unroudness. I would suggest to change it as follows:

- s:=min(max(12,round(2.5*med)),s); {reasonable window to measure this star}
+ s:=min(max(14,round(3.0*med)),s); {reasonable window to measure this star including oval/unround stars}

The unroundness will decrease at higher HFD values. That's why the detection worked in the last step.

That will result in this:

Yes, using 14 and 3.0*med look like a good compromise.
It still detect all the star in "why not more stars.fits" and detect the smallest of the two stars here, only the bigger is not detected.
I need to increase the box to 16 to detect both stars, but in this case some close small stars in "why not more stars.fits" are not detected because of the double star check.

So I think we can stay with this change:
