Summary | 0001378: Cannot align the moons disk over the suns for the 2017 solar eclipse using the Observatory Lat. & Long. positioning.
Description | Unable to cause the moon to align with the solar disk by changing the Lat. & Long. of my observatory position. Positioning can be done in part with adjusting time in days hours , minutes seconds.
Steps To Reproduce | Lock on solar disk. Input date and time for the Aug 21 2017 total solar eclipse observe positional change of lunar disk relative to the sun on display. Adjust Lat. Long. for exact alignment of the sun and moon. Moon will no move at all with observatory positional change.

I cannot reproduce the problem, for me it work. I do the following: - lock on the Sun - Set the time at the eclipse maximum: 8/21/2017 18h25 UT - Set the observatory lat=37.0 long=87.0 The Sun is totally covered by the Moon. - Set the observatory lat=33.0 long=87.0 The Moon move in top/right direction and uncover a crescent of Sun. Can you try this sequence and give me your result. |
I tried your coordinates and time and the moon covered only the top of the sun. I tried your new Lat. & Long. positional change, but no motion was observed by the moon. Comparing your time and observatory position with mine the sun moon relationships are identical. It seems that no matter what Lat. & Long. I put in the moons position does not change. |
OK I see it. This is because you set the planet to show geocentric position. If you click on the detailed information for the Sun or the Moon, this is indicated in the Coordinates box. Please open Setup / Solar system and click on Topocentric. |
It works excellently, problem is resolved! Thank You. I have a question what does Geocentric and Topocentric mean in relation to SkyCharts program? |
Thank you for your confirmation. Geocentric meant the position of the other planet as seen from the Earth center. Topocentric meant the position as seen from the configured observatory. The only interest for the Geocentric position is for comparison with a printed almanac, or to look for event for the whole Earth. Maybe I need to hide this option in some advanced settings. |
