Summary | 0001617: Neighbor list - to limited
Description | In "About object/Detail" form, "Neighbor" button should list nearby objects. However, in PDF help is not specified what "nearby" exactly mean. For instance, when look at and right click on Jupiter (attached chart) to see details, on "Neighbor" button is listed only Jupiter and Adrastea. I would expect all Jupiter's satellites in list. However, it is relative what "nearby" exactly means.

The neighbor button list the same objects as if you Shift+click at the same position, or use the popup menu "all objects at this position". The search radius is the mouse cursor circle. The goal of this function is to allow to select objects at a too short distance to be selected otherwise, the extreme case is two objects at the same pixel location. For example on a wide field map you want to select Theta Orionis but you always get M42. Click Neighbor and then Theta in the list. Maybe Neighbor button can give a bit wider area, between the cursor circle and the full screen list given by the object list button? |

Thank you for explanation. For me, "neighbor" term is more related to local group of objects, rather than objects after 2D projection, as this rečated with planetary satellites, double starts, constellation... However, that may be quite complicated to achieve. Yes, it would be nice if you could just enlarge a bit the area, if not introduce any further complexity. |

Searching for parented objects can be very complicated, the only simple case is planet and satellites. But we generally not have the information for most objects. I increase the search radius to 50 pixels when you click the Neighbour button. Also the list header show the search radius, making thing more clear. rev 3460: https://sourceforge.net/p/skychart/code/3460/ |
