Summary | 0002313: CdC. Object details - Visibility info missing
Description | When I right-click on an object and select 'About' to get object details, the section 'Visibility for your observatory' is missing. It happens when Chart/ coordinates selected in setup is either of the two epoch J2000 coordinate options. If instead I select 'Apparent' or 'Mean of the date' coordinates, then the 'Visibility for your observatory' information appears. Is there a reason why the choice of coordinates should affect whether or not the 'Visibility' information is shown in the Object Details panel? Is there a setting to make sure it always appears? (This is in version 4.2.1 4073. Was the same in V 4.0)
Steps To Reproduce | Always happens. Happens on different PCs and different versions of Windows: W 10/ 64 and Windows 7/ 64

This is on purpose, we normally not use J2000 coordinates when we are interested on local condition. This simplify the display with just the information we normally need in this case. Is there any specific reason you need that? |
|
If I am searching for an object (for example a catalogued star or exoplanet) entering search coordinates, then J2000 coordinates are needed. But then if I want to check visibility of the object, I must change coordinates to Apparent to get that. So in practice, sometimes I find I have to swap back and forth. Usually, of course, whatever setting I saved at the end of the previous session turns out to be the wrong one I need at start of the next session! It's just a small inconvenience, not a big problem. But if it was an easy change ..... :) Adrian |

OK, I make a change so the local visibility information is always show. There is a few seconds of differences for the different time because they are computed with the mean position of the date instead of the true apparent position (no nutation, aberration). But this is probably good for most of the use. https://github.com/pchev/skychart/commit/94f54766e9bef74c51435839ccaf62a31f8e8769 This will be in Monday beta version. |
