| Summary | 0002823: HD catalogue numbers for custom sub-constellations | ||||
| Description | I've tried to create a custom .cln file that includes sub-constellations for better navigation and star hopping in the virgo cluster. Naked eye stars are in HR catalogue that is used in .cln files. But those visible in finder scope (e.g. up to 9 mag) for example with HD references are not supported. Is it possible to add a prefix for alternative references? Any alternatives? Such as drawing lines as overlay? | ||||
| Steps To Reproduce | This works: .LT 4534 4564 .LT 4534 4535 .LT 4564 4535 This is what I'm looking for: .WA HD108560 HD108451 .WA HD108614 HD108560 .WA HD108451 HD108614 | ||||
| Additional Information | I found older discussion https://www.ap-i.net/mantis/view.php?id=1427 that seems to be unresolved since 2015. Therefore raising this new one. The idea to add virgo sub-constellations comes from https://eyes4skies.de/v2/proj/virgo.htm | ||||

2 years ago I add the capability to add any star from the default XHIP catalog. So the following work: HD108560, BD+122474, HIP60842 , just be sure there is no space character in the name. The problem with the stars you mention is HD108451, this is a high proper motion star that is not in Hipparcos. So when you add the 3 lines you mention, only the one from HD108614 to HD108560 is draw. What I can do is add a search in all the configured catalog if it fail in XHIP. HD108451 can be found from SAO. |

Hi Patrick, thank you for that quick response! I have now changed from SkyChart 4.2.1 4073 to latest 4.3. beta and above references (HD, BD and HIP) work well! The Star has Gaia reference DR3 3907768542498198016 and I clicked the Simbad link in "Details" window to get his HD reference. https://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/sim-id?Ident=Gaia%20DR3%203907768542498198016 Either fallback search (from SAO) or/and Gaia references would work. For example: .WA 3907569359094853632 33907768542498198016 or .WA DR33907569359094853632 DR333907768542498198016 |

Hi Christian, Yes, 4.3-4988 build this morning include the last change I do yesterday. It work with any star name you can search from your installed catalog, but only if there is no space in the name. For this reason I make another change to allow to search GAIA stars without the space. You can use GaiaDR33907768542498198016 in your file. |

I think this can help for a for many different use and for that it is not convenient to have a single file with everything. I can add a simple list of file to load. The advantage are to not mix-up with the standard constellation, have individual file per project, avoid to modify files in protected system directory. Do this look useful for you? |

Thank you for latest beta release. I've just created 20 custom sub-constellations. It would definitively helpful to have custom star references (.cln) and labels (.cla) in separate files (e.g. in ...AppData\Local\Skychart\). This would help amateur astronomers to share their asterisms or sub-constellation maps. We have some very active projects in Germany that would benefit from that. Some other observations / proposal for future changes: Other observations during creation: 1. Copy star references from UI: - I double clicked a star to get its details. - Marked the reference (e.g. HD or GAIA number) - Selected copy (or pressed CTRL+C) - This usually copies the selected text. But occasionally the full text box content or additional text I have not selected (e.g. Star from the headline in addition to HD123456). I was not able to fully reproduce that. - Manual formatting is required (e.g. 123456 to HD123456 or 390… to GAIADR3390…) 2. Preview - I’ve selected Setup -> All configuration options -> Display -> Lines “Apply” after relevant changed to reload the files. Is there another option for "reload" 3. Mixed with build in constellations Custom constellations may overlap with predefined (e.g. IAU) constellations. A different “line-pattern” or color could be helpful to distinguish them. When I zoom out, the star map gets very crowded with custom constellations. FOV filtering would be convenient. A perfect solution would be to build those sub-constellations via UI (e.g. select stars to connect them via line,...). |

I will look for that, not sure I can do it before one or two month because all my time is now for the next version of the Virtual Moon Atlas. No problem for a GUI to add stars correctly formatted to the file, this can be done using a script. |
