| Summary | 0002825: Observation map printing issues | ||||
| Description | I've added custom constellations (https://eyes4skies.de/v2/proj/virgo.htm) to SkySafari and changed lables for objects of interest. It all looks well on my screen (DELL screen 3440x1440). Resolution of save as function is too low (causes artifacts when printing). Print as into Microsoft PDF printer has good resolution but font sizes to large and boxes surrounding DSS images. I like to print my charts (as they apperar on screen) to DIN A4 papers for visual observation or add them into a document. Any ideas / proposals? | ||||
| Steps To Reproduce | Save as function: - Produces images with font and object sizes etc. similar to the screen - Resolution is a bit too low. I get artifacts when adding them into DIN A4 documents for printing Print feature: - I printed into Microsoft PDF printer (600 DPI) with A4 landscape format - Resolution (lines) better compared to save as - Font size and lines significantly larger (compared to screen and save as) - DSS images has grey boxes | ||||

The best way to get a high resolution bitmap is to select "Bitmap file" in the menu File / Printer setup, then indicate a large value for Width and Height, for example 5000x3000. Do this work better for you? |

One more idea about this issue. The problem with direct printing, PDF or Postscript is because the drawing API are much more limited than what I can use to produce a raster bitmap. For example there is limitation to line type depending on the line width, no transparency for object pictures. The advantage is to use much less memory and this is why I implemented that many years ago. To make a bitmap of native resolution for A4 @ 600 DPI it require about 120MB of memory, the double if there is pictures, this is something any computer can accept now. So I can change the default printing to use a raster image of better quality, keep the vector option only for very large print or memory limited computer. |
