Summary | 0002302: NGC2652 (non-existent) shows adjacent to NGC2974
Description | Centering on NGC2974 shows NGC2652 as overlapping/adjacent. NGC2652 is a non-existent NGC. Selecting NGC262 shows it as also MCG+00-25-008, which is more properly the designation for NGC2974.

This is the way it is in the original SAC 8.1 file: |NGC 2652 |MCG +00-25-008 |GALXY|SEX|09 42.5|-03 42|11.9|99.9|231|12| 3.4 m| 2.1 m|40 |E 4 | ... |NGC 2974 |MCG 0-25- 8 |GALXY|SEX|09 42.6|-03 42|10.9|13 |233|13| 3.4 m| 2.1 m|42 |Sa | ... I not want to make any change to any catalog, other people already spend their life trying to fix NGC inconsistencies. I suggest you change the catalog option in Setup /Catalog / CdC deep sky. Check "Open NGC" instead of SAC, this is the default for new installation of CdC. It contain much better coordinates for every object with modern value from Hyperleda and NED. With this catalog NGC2652 is show as an unknown object at position 08h43m13s -03°36'45". My printed RNGC show this same coordinates. I suppose SAC make the assumption there was a typo of one hour in the original NGC and this is in fact the same object. Do Open NGC look better for you? |

Works for me. Thanks. |

For my software I rely fully on the Wolfgang Steinicke's REV NGC&IC. NGC2652 is the same as NGC2974 ( or PGC27762) as indicated by SAC81. NGC2652 is also unknown in Simbad. So one an entry for a single object with three names NGC2974/NGC2652/PGC27762 would be best. There is no object at 08h43m13s -03°36'45" so an entry for this position should be removed. Han |

Steinicke NGC is not bad but Open NGC is better in my opinion because it only rely on modern source like NED and Hyperleda and not care about all the history of this catalog. Also Steinicke license do not allow the inclusion of the catalog as part of a Linux distribution. I make a change to move the SAC to the obsolete catalog tab: https://github.com/pchev/skychart/commit/34816c3e2ec34d78484fa1902df672761559a05b |
