Do you remember after which telnet command or other operation the crash occur? From the log, in this area you do a "search m51", "slew", "tracktelescope on", then click a few time on m51 and hd120231 (or this is because of chart auto-refresh). There is a log in ~/Library/Application Support/skychart/cdc_trace.txt but it probably contain nothing useful in this case. Also I not remember the bug I have fixed since July, please upgrade to the latest skychart-4.1-3678 |
After the "redraw" command I only entered the "getfov" command. I don't know what all that output is between "redraw" and "getfov". Unfortunately I had the skychart windows on another screen from the telnet session window so I could not see the timing of the events. But after I entered the "getfov" and after it responded I switched to the skychart screen and saw the alert message. I will be more careful from now on. I was just trying to find out what the response was for the various commands that I plan to incorporate into my program that interfaces with skychart. I have have had other crashes where skychart just ended with no messages, but I was just playing with it at the time not being careful so I will not report that for now. I am running on macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6. The bug report does not ask me those questions, like the old bug report did. I will get the latest version as you suggested and try my tests again. |
I updated the software to the latest as you suggested. It happened again, same dialog as before so I won't send an image again. 1. I connected to the scope via INDI GUI on "connect telescope" 2. It connected, but more on that below. 3. I did my telnet as before. (searched object, slew, telescopetrack on, redraw) 4. it seemed to work. 5. I did nothing further. 6. left to do other things on computer 7. came back and it was still tracking. 8. I clicked on window frame to focus on skychart. 9. The telescope connect window closed, the INDO GUI closed. 10. The alert was displayed as before. I have also left skychart alone at other times, (doing things on other screen.) Later I went back to screen but skychart was gone, no message, nothing reported. I assume that it is just fell through to the application terminate, because there is no trace. I have also noted that the skychart does not update the display unless I move the mouse. For example, I do the connect of the telescope. I open the INDI GUI and select connect to the scope. The GUI does not update the connect status until I move the mouse. The same with the connect telescope dialog. I connect and the status turns yellow. If I don't move the mouse nothing further happens. If after some time I move the mouse on skychart the connect dialog updates instantly, it turns green and says connected. seems like it is not going through its run loop as it should. |

I have an update. I noticed that skychart only exits with no error after some time ONLY when connected to the telescope. It does not exit if I just bring it up WITHOUT connecting to the telescope. Many times it just exits without the access violation. In all my tests I just connect telescope , slew to an object and let it sit tracking the object. After some time (it varies) skychart just exits. I changed how I start skychart to put its startup in a bash script so that I could get a timestamp of when it does that, because I am usually not around when it happens. Here is the simple script: #!/bin/bash # gather info on skychart when it crashes echo Start skychart date open -W /Applications/Astronomy/Cartes\ du\ Ciel/skychart.app retval=$? date echo $((retval)) Sample output: Start skychart Tue Nov 21 03:57:31 PST 2017 Tue Nov 21 09:29:08 PST 2017 0 Start skychart Tue Nov 21 09:29:36 PST 2017 Tue Nov 21 23:19:13 PST 2017 0 The telescope end is running on a PC (Windows 7), using the INDI - ASCOM interface. I was running my actual Telescope ASA driver in simulation mode. There is an option to do that. In all of my testing that interface as been up 24/7 for a week now and its still running. The connect logic on skychart does not connect properly unless I move the mouse around during the connection process. It might be part of the same problem that causes it to crash eventually. I loaded a short video (.mov) demonstrating the problem. I gzipped it to get it down to the bug tracker upload limits . It is 5.7 mb uncompressed. Let me know if you need anything else. |

This is an interesting points, at first I not understand the problem was after a few hours with the program running. I will search for memory leak or similar in the telescope connection. For another problem ( 0001849 ) I make a compilation of the program with a new version of the compiler on High Sierra. It can be interesting if you can try to install this version, it is compatible with macOS from 10.10 to 10.13 download from: https://vega.ap-i.net/tmp/skychart-4.1-3681-x86_64-macosx.dmg |
I tried the version you said, but the "about" says it is 3517 even though the file name on the dmg says 3681. The connect does not require me to move the mouse, so that works. However it still dies. This time it got the access violation dialog, which now says to pick Abort or OK. Start skychart Thu Nov 23 14:24:43 PST 2017 Thu Nov 23 16:34:52 PST 2017 0 |

I thought that maybe the access violation was caused when it tried to track below the horizon or needed a meridian flip. The telescope simulation does stop the movement in the RA in those situations and skychart still keeps showing the correct position, but now of course the RA is changing to always point at the same altitude. I told the simulation software to hold at Zenith (see atzenith image). It did that. But eventually it got the access violation (see alert2 image) anyway. This current version (see about image), DMG 3681? seems to work a lot better in updating the display. If I continue at the access violation alert by picking OK it shows that the telescope connection is gone. I can connect again, (see connectagain image) but now the access violations happen much sooner within 10 to 20 minutes. {Side note: the driver name field on the connect window has the wrong name “ooptikServer Telescope”. It should say “AstroopticServer Telescope” which the INDI GUI displays correctly} . {Second side note: I got my program interface to skychart working. So now I can take a list of objects slew to them one at a time and take SBIG photos of each one. In the prior versions I used I could not get it to work. But, it works now. I noticed that it does not produce the “.”s anymore or maybe the timing changed. Were the dots eliminated?} {Third side note: Why is the telescope pole rate one second? It seems that uses up more wifi bandwidth and laptop cpu time. The pole rate only needs to be fast when slewing. At other times it just sits there and a 10 second rate would seem more appropriate. My SBIG camera also uses the WIFI and takes some time to transfer 20megs (about 50 seconds). I would rather give the WIFI bandwidth to the camera. The prior planetarium software I used had a settable pole rate from 1 sec to 1 minute or off totally. Then against at the other end TheskyX had the pole flying along at .5sec and seems to want to keep the display updated at that rate, which is nuts to my thinking. I don’t know if the pole rate can be adjusted in skychart, but it would be nice if it could. Forgive me, if it is there but I just did not see it yet}. By the way great program, thank you and to all that work on this program! |

Thank you for all this information. The version number is wrong in this testing version because I quickly build it from the development IDE instead of the build server. The new standard beta version available tomorrow will include the right version number, 3693 now. Can you test the new beta when it is available? I do more macOS specific change, increase the stack size as it was a bit too small, and fix a small memory leak in my indi client, so the new beta will be more stable. I run it for 10 hours last night with connection to a windi server running ascom simulator, without any crash. The standard Ascom simulator do not stop tracking when it reach the meridian. What is the Ascom simulator driver you use? AstroopticServer? where can I download it? I increase the size of the text so “AstroopticServer Telescope" can now show in full. The server still send a . every 5 seconds, if you not see it this is probably you unchecked "client connection keep alive" in Setup/General/Server. I cannot change the telescope polling rate because this is initiated by the INDI server that send the messages at this rate. What I can change is the rate at which I redraw the telescope position in the chart. This not affect the traffic with the INDI server but I remark a slowdown in VNC connection because of the screen redraw when the telescope is connected. |
1: “Can you test the new beta when it is available?” YES 2: “What is the Ascom simulator driver you use? AstroopticServer? where can I download it?” It is the ASCOM telescope driver for my ASA DDM 85 mount. I don’t think you need to install it, complicating your testing for no good reason. I am not using the latest driver and they changed the installation process since I installed mine. But if you want to punish yourself it is at: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B7VuwIiNBZw2VDJQTjJJS0o3eGc It might not work if it does not see the mount at least once. But, i am not sure about that. 3: “The server still send a . every 5 seconds, if you not see it this is probably you unchecked "client connection keep alive" in Setup/General/Server.” Yes I did uncheck it, that is why. I will leave it unchecked. 4: “I cannot change the telescope polling rate…” Okay I understand. The redraw rate of the screen is fine don’t change anything. I just wanted to offload the work the “Micro computer” at the telescope end has to do, because it handles the mount, the SBIG camera and guiding, focuser and in the future a field rotator. All via WIFI. |
I tried the new beta. It connects, but when I try to slew to an object I get "Bad INDI message". Scope shows it is still at same coordinates before the attempted slew. |
I make many test on the Mac version this week but I cannot reproduce the problem with "Bad INDI message" using INDI simulator or wIndi+Ascom simulator. But I make a lot of change to improve the INDI client stability. For me it connect more quickly with this changes and work reliably for hours with many slew and sync. This changes will be in the tomorrow beta version, please test this new version and report how it work. |
I tested the latest beta (3700). Works great! Ran it for 24 hours with no failure yet. We have high winds here right now, so a power glitch stopped the continuous test. Only my mac restarted the telescope PC did not. Upon restart skychart game back up and I connected to the telescope. It was still tracking via the telescope simulation the object I had selected. So everything is good. I think this fix is good. Thanks!! |
Thank you to report your testing, and nice this is now solved! |
