Summary0002839: unable to store settings in windows 11
DescriptionWhen starting up CdC it first requests that the printer is online and running. I cancelled the request and configured the printer to create a post-script file. I saved the configuration, leaving CdC. After restarting, the same happened again.
It seems that the program cannot store changes to the configuration. This is annoying because it also does not save any other settings, like location, screen colours, coordinate lines etc., so that every time I start up CdC, I am again in the basic configuration after program installation.
I am using CdC on Windows 10 on several computers without these problems.

The issue with some printer driver is fixed in the beta version 4.3 you can install from https://sourceforge.net/projects/skychart/files/0-beta/

For CdC there is no difference between win10 and win11, but there can be other difference that prevent the config to be saved.

First be sure in the Setup menu "Save configuration on exit" is checked.
From the same menu try to click "Save configuration now" , is the configuration restored if you restart the program?

Thanks, Patrick. The printer issue and the store settings issue are solved now with the beta version. However, I cannot create any star chart. I have loaded various star catalogs, planets, comets, asteroids etc. and have set display parameters to default, but only get a black screen. I also get error messages when trying to load MPC data manually, see screenshots below. What is the problem?

Very strange, I never see this error.

This is because the file sqlite3.dll that manage the database for different data cannot load.
I see two possible reason:
- a mismatch between 32bit and 64bit installation.
- the antivirus silently remove this file.

Can you check the directory where you install CdC (C:\Program Files\Ciel\) contain the following files:
cat\
data\
doc\
catgen.exe
cdcicon.exe
libcalceph.dll
libcdcwcs.dll
libchealpix.dll
libcrypto-3-x64.dll
libgetdss.dll
libplan404.dll
libssl-3-x64.dll
skychart.exe
sqlite3.dll
unins000.dat
unins000.exe
varobs.exe
zlib1.dll

Yes, I see all the files listed, plus the file 'varobs_lpv_bulletin.exe'

What I also see is that the country time zone cannot be set in the setup menu (see screenshot), although I see that the timezone info is available in the folder "C:\Program Files\Ciel\data\zoneinfo"

Maybe I try to uninstall completely and re-install from scratch. See, whether the problem prevails.

I did a complete re-install. To my surprise, my location and other data were still there, obviously from the previous installation. Furthermore, when installing the base kernel of the solar system database, I get the error message below:

Yes, it is completely broken.
it is better to totally uninstall, after uninstall be sure "Program Files\Ciel" directory is removed.
Check there is no other install of the program at another location.
Also remove the configuration directory : %LOCALAPPDATA%/skychart

So the issue is probably a permission problem with the directory %LOCALAPPDATA%/skychart , or C:\Users\marku\AppData\Local\Skychart
Delete this directory and try to restart the program.

I did as you recommended. Now, after re-installation from scratch, everything works fine (at least what I have tested so far).
Possible reason for the troubles: When deleting folders I found one that could only be delelted with administrator rights. After deletion the PC seems to have been clean, and installation went smoothly.

Thanks a lot for your help, Patrick!

Thank you for the explanation.
This loss of access to some file or directory is typical when trying to run the program as administrator.
The new version prohibits it for precisely this reason.
