Summary0001158: Star missing from Extended Hipparcos catalog - Alula Australis (Xi Ursa Major)
DescriptionAlula Australis (Xi [or Ksi] Ursa Major) is not found when I have the Extended Hipparcos catalog selected, nor when I add Washington Double Star catalog or the obsolete Bright Star Catalog. Field numbers are 0-10 for all.
Steps To ReproduceWhen I use advanced search, the name "Alula Australis" comes up under "Bright Stars", but when I search I get the message "HR4375 not found. Maybe the catalog is not installed, or there is a wrong path in catalog setting". When I pick the next entry "Alula Borealis" the star is found, so I have the correct path. Under Setup/catalog none of the selected paths are in red. I can select everything on the page CdC Stars and still don't find it on the chart or with search.

This star appears if you enable Tycho2 catalog or GCVS catalog. According to SIMBAD, it has Hipparcos ID = "HIP 55203", but it is not in the xHIP catalog on VizieR. So this is most probably an xHIP error, not a SkyChart bug. But maybe SkyChart could fill in that star...

I take a look at the problem and try to find a solution.

"HIP 55203" appear only in the original Hipparcos I/239 but include almost no data, only a mean position and a magnitude. Probably because of the difficulty/impossibility to astrometrically resolve such a multiple star using the satellite data.

This star is missing from XHIP V/137D because it is based on Hipparcos New Reduction I/311 where it is also missing.
But this is not a catalog error, it was probably removed on purpose because of the poor measurement data.

There is 263 stars in this case and I will probably make a program to add the minimal available data from the original Hipparcos.

But if you add the GCVS catalog it appear with the name ksi UMA, and if you add the WDS the name is STF1523.

Revision 2496 include a new version of XHIP that add again the HIP stars removed in HIP2:
http://sourceforge.net/p/skychart/code/2496/

Revision 2497 fix the "HR4375 not found error.

You can install this version for Windows to test it:
