| Summary | 0001196: Ghost images of Jupiter satellites | ||||
| Description | I have observed ghost images of Jupiter satellites when transiting the planet. See attached. One hour later they were not there. Yet later Io's was. The ghosts seem to be "realistic" spheres instead of flat circles. Universal Time: 2013-10-12T06:06:57 JD=2456577.75483 All seen from San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. | ||||

Hi Guillermo, The "ghost" are the satellites draw by Xplanet, the circle are draw by Skychart. In normal circumstance they line up nicely, and they line up if you set the projection to Equatorial. But at the time/location you mention, Jupiter is almost exactly on the horizon and in Alt/Az projection the program correct the refraction offset for each object. So the Jupiter image computed by Xplanet is offset by the refraction amount at the center of Jupiter, and each satellite is offset by its own amount. The distance between the circle and its ghost is this difference in refraction. I am not sure how to fix that. The best option is probably to shrink the Xplanet image by the refraction difference between the top and bottom of the planet, but this need some testing. |

Thanks. I had completely forgoten about Xplanet. I remember I installed it years ago to use with Cartes, but never realized that it is now included in the program. Never mind. |

The trick work, see new screenshot. As a side effect the we can now benefit of elongated planet, Sun and Moon near the horizon. This is also useful for occultation near the horizon. I also fixed the call the Xplanet to use the JPL ephemeris if available. Revision: 2636, 2637 and 2638. http://sourceforge.net/p/skychart/code/2636/ |
