This look like the same problem as reported with Virtual Planet on El Capitan.

Unfortunately I not use a Mac myself, this make testing and debugging almost impossible.

At this point I think the only solution is to withdraw the Mac version and suggest to use the Windows version with Wine.

Can you try the Windows version and tell me how it work?

If you not already have the required software you can try Wineskin. This is a nice application to encapsulate the application: http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com

OK I finally success to upgrade one of my virtual machine to El Capitan.

In the virtual machine both VMA and VPA work fine without any problem, so the problem is not global with this OS X version.

Can you take a look at this discussion about this problem? there is many suggestion along the 300 messages, with suggestion to upgrade the Nvidia drivers.

From jcj2249 :

I've just downloaded and installed Virtual Moon Atlas on my iMac running Mac OS 10.11.
When I click on atlun or cclun my session quits.

The crash problem is definitively related to the video card because I ran Virtual_Moon_Atlas on my laptop and I encountered no problem :
MacBook Pro Retina 15” mid 2014, running El Capitan 10.11.4
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

I get a crash on my desktop iMac late 2009 :
iMac 27” late 2009, running El Capitan 10.11.4
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
