Summary | 0001612: DSS image for M31 is wrongly scaled
Description | Even I do not see the purpose of DSS images anymore (BW and as well can download and store only one image) I have tested recently few of them. Focusing on M31 (Andromeda) and pressing DSS icon return server error on large FOV. It require FOV to be less than 1 degree on order to download correctly. After download, it show it, however scaled wrongly. Instead to be scaled according size of deep sky object parametric display, it is shown 10x or even more times smaller and barely can be seen when disable "Show display deep Sky Object". For M43 (Orion) it seems to be very quite close to borders CDC shows. Drawing is however very, very slow - instead 2s for refresh, it need more than 5s. Another related bug is if disable "Show display deep Sky Object", neither deep sky objects can be searched (not found error).

To be clear, upper apply only for default DSS settings. "Another related bug is if disable "Show display deep Sky Object", neither deep sky objects can be searched (not found error)." This is already explained here: http://www.ap-i.net/mantis/view.php?id=1596 However, it is not practical to have parametric and real DSS image on screen, nor to to use advanced search. |

I make two change in rev 3448 that solve two problem: - Use Skyview DSS by default as it is not limited in FOV - Allow to search for not show objects from the quick search bar, and use the advanced search for the case discussed in 0001596 https://sourceforge.net/p/skychart/code/3448 Now the other points: - DSS is still very useful because it is "all sky" and not limited to a few objects. Also it show similar detail to what an amateur can easily get with a small refractor and a ccd camera. - You can archive downloaded image and show more than one image by using the "Archive" function. https://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/documentation/pictures#image_archive - FOV limitation depend on the many server used to get the images. Rules can change with time so it is not convenient to implement them in the software. But the error message from the server is normally clear. - If you center on M31 with a small FOV you get a short exposure image taken to get the detail in the center of the galaxy. It is not wrongly scaled, it just show only the galaxy center. There is a few other place, near bright objects, where this short exposure DSS image where taken. |
