Summary0001766: Simplified deep sky searches
DescriptionHi Patrick,

to be able to search for a deep sky object there is the need for entering the exact string that identifies the catalog. Please consider that often many abbreviations are available and sometimes preferred too.
What about adding a button for each enabled catalog to simplify the advanced search? So the user, when he doesn't know the initials used by the catalog within limiting the search, can opt for the advanced search to figure out them and to easily complete the search.

Thanks
Armando

Yes this is an option for the catalogs that include only numeric name and the first letters are only to identify the catalog.

But for other like the GCVS the full name is part of the identifier and this will not help.

Also searching for a part of the name, not including the start of the name, can be very inefficient for big catalogs.

A simple way to know what CdC search expect is to click on an object from the same catalog, copy the label in the search box and modify only the number.

I still didn't figure out the ID required by Lynds Bright Nebulae catalog.
It seems to be enabled but I see no LBN identifiers on the chart.

Yes, LBN is a special case because it as no search index so you cannot search it at the moment.

But this is a very small catalog and I can probably add a quick sequential search for LBN xxx.
I try to add that.

I add searching of LBN number in revision 3644:
https://sourceforge.net/p/skychart/code/3644/

With this change you can search for lbn337 or LBN 337 in the search bar.

Please try with next week beta version (not today version) and let me know if this is OK.

I just tried on rev.3648 but it seems not working.
Should I reinstall the catalog? I simply executed the exe to update SkyChart...

Sorry there is still bug with the catalog activation.

The search work but you must first zoom in to the FOV that activate the catalog, to be sure zoom to 1 degree.
Then you can unzoom and search for a lbn number.

I try to fix that for next week.

the bug is fixed by revision 3649:
https://sourceforge.net/p/skychart/code/3649/

This is for next week version, in the mean time you have to do the trick described in the previous note.

I remember I set a (small) FOV at which the catalog was activated.
So maybe something else is wrong.

You must also be sure the LBN catalog is checked in Setup/Catalog/Cdc deepsky

I had to enable to option required to show deep sky objects.
Anyway I think the search should not be affected by this option.

The program only search for category of object that are show on the map, for example if you disable the planet it will not search for "Moon".

This as been a question for years, and there is two opinions:
- I not want to see DSO but searching for M1 send me to an empty area, this is a bug.
- I want to search DSO on DSS image without being annoyed by DSO drawing.

The first reason let me add this test many years ago.
Maybe the second use is prevalent now and I need to remove this test.

Is searching for DSO without displaying them on the map is important for you?

It's not important for me. I just think the search should not be affected by display options.
Because of the use of DSS images I sometimes disable DSO drawings and... the auto-save feature makes the rest.
