Summary0002311: "Milky Way" checkbox selection/deselection may cause saved horiz. screen size to change from 1600 to 1616 px ...
DescriptionThe images saved with "File>Save image" may change to different dimensions when the "Milky Way" checkbox is selected or deselected.
The "Milky Way" checkbox selection/deselection may cause the saved screen size to change.
(Setup>Display>Lines>Milky Way>Show Milky checkbox,)
For instance, from 1600x900 pixels horiz. to 1616x900 pixels or back from to 1616x900 pixels to 1600x900 pixels.
Regular image sizes are needed for graphic overlays, etc.
Is the type of monitor (laptop) a factor here?
Feature: Set image output size to prevent image size distortion based on hardware, etc.
Need to set the image output size in pixels such as 1600x900.
Possibly add check boxes in the "Save image" dialog
Problem: Print feature appears to be based on screen size, which is variable if not set properly.
To print max size image:
* Make sure Carte du Ciel is maximized. (square button on upper right corner)
* View>toolbar> TURN OFF: Object bar, Left bar, Right bar, Status bar.
* View>Full Screen
(* does the position of the Taskbar (right, left, top, bottom) have anything to do with the screen size calculation here?)

Then, if "File>Save Image" (as .png) get 1600x900 pixel images sometimes,
But if then select the Setup>Display>Lines>Milky Way>Show Milky checkbox, the size of the image may change to 1616x900 pixels.
Changing back and forth from Milky Way display appears to visibly distort the sky map while changing. Is this possibly depending on what setup settings are made (i.e. lines) before? The entire sky map looks like it expands and then resets, but not quite the same in horizontal pixels.
* How about an option to save the image of the center only (900x900), (720x720), (600x600) pixels?
Steps To Reproduce* Make sure Carte du Ciel is maximized. (square button on upper right corner)
* View>toolbar> TURN OFF: Object bar, Left bar, Right bar, Status bar.
* View>Full Screen

Then, "File>Save Image" (as .png) (Test 1.png)

(Setup>Display>Lines>Milky Way> Select "Show Milky Way" checkbox,)

Then, "File>Save Image" (as .png) (Test 2.png)

Check the image sizes in Photoshop. Are the image sizes the same?

I cannot reproduce the problem, but the size difference of 16 let me think it can be because of the visibility of the scrollbar when you open Setup/Display.
Can you try to remove the scrollbar from the menu View / Scrollbar.
You can also try to change the milky way visibility without opening the setup menu, use the menu Chart / Show Objects / Show milky way

Also this menu File / Save image ... is only intended for quick screenshot, not for precision work.

All the feature you request about selecting a fixed size is already available from the the menu File / Printer setup.
In "Print method" select "Bitmap file" and give the exact dimension of the bitmap you want. This can be bigger than the screen, or exactly a square of any size.
You can select a command to open the bitmap, for example photoshop.exe or let blank to just save the file.

Then select File / Print.
Uncheck both header and footer, select "As on screen" and click Print.

Rename the file between each print because the filename is always cdcprint.png.

Testing the File> printing options I found:
File>"Printer Setup" dialog error:
"Path to save the file" button does not set consistently.
Pick button and get "Select Folder" dialog box.
Select folder and pick OK.

To reproduce:
File>"Printer Setup"
"Path to save the file" button
Pick button and get "Select Folder" dialog box.
Select folder and pick OK.
Check: File>"Printer Setup"
Is it still set? Repeat several times until it sets.
-------------------------
Using File>Print may produce erratic star charts
See test example
1600x1600_Milky_Error=BlackSpots.png
black patches in chart.
This error corrects itself after multiple prints.
-------------------
Using File>Printer setup>"Printer setup" dialog
"Print method" area
Select "Bitmap file"
Pick OK.
The file created is not cdcprint.bmp
The file created is named cdcprint.png
It is not possible for me to create a .bmp file.
This dialog needs a "type of file" dropdown list
to select .bmp or .png or .jpg etc.
Switching between "Paint" and "Photoshop" does not get bitmap.
Using:
C:\Windows\System32\mspaint.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe
--------------
Setup>Observatory --- hard to set
"Observatory database" scroll list may stall at midpoint of scroll.
See:
Observatory_database_Scroll_Err.png
"Hereford" is at top. Must pick "Search" button to reset to start with A.
pick three dots at end of list to make it continue down.
Can the scroll function be continued with down arrow to not need three dots?
-----------
The "Royal Observatory" is not listed in the "United Kingdom" database.
Coordinates: 51°28′40″N 0°00′05″W

When set manually, the "Print chart" dialog box "Observatory" box will fill with:
Sky Charts, Observatory Royal Greenwich Observatory, Center RA: 23h53m DEC:+83°54', HD1237
(so it sees the observatory in the database.)
-------------------
Set center function:
Need new function to set the center of the chart and orientation:
Need a "Set Center" dialog box to set the RA and DEC of center of chart
as well as orientation.
Picking the center on the screen now depends on a star being there.
-----------
Need to set corners of print area by RA and DEC in several (3) locations:
Left Top RA and DEC
Left Bottom RA and DEC
Right Top RA and DEC
Right Bottom RA and DEC.

Could be set in a dialog box or by picking on screen if possible.
-------------
Need to set resolution for selected print area, not just 72 dpi. Need best resolution as possible.
Need to print a small square or rectangle of the spherical sky at a specific resolution as a bitmap .bmp or .png or other file format.
------------
Need print animation feature to print current chart but with a series of print parameters that could be set as "Photoshop" animations are:
Setup>Display> Change object colors one by one, print lines: coordinates, constellations, boundaries, etc.
Setup>Coordinates, etc.
------
Also need one button to set the most accurate naked eye view possible with the settings available: Naked eye stars, projection such as
ARC Zenital equidistant, etc.
----
Thanks.

Not easy to sort out all of this. will try point by point.

- Testing the File> printing options I found:
What is exactly the problem? I do that and not find anything abnormal. This open the Windows standard file dialog to get the directory name.

- Using File>Print may produce erratic star charts
What is the catalog you use for this chart?
For performance reason there is a limited number of catalog file that can be open, so some deep catalog cannot be used with width field.
If you select the default XHIP catalog it can make this chart to magnitude 8 without problem.

- Setup>Observatory --- hard to set
You must use the search field to fill the observatory list. This is because it is not convenient to have a drop down list with thousand of entries.

- The "Royal Observatory" is not listed in the "United Kingdom" database.
Search for "Greenwich"
I get the data from https://geonames.nga.mil/gns/html/namefiles.html and not want to edit anything.

- Set center function:
Use the menu View - Position

- Need to set corners of print area by RA and DEC in several (3) locations:
This is not possible, specifically for width field distorted by the projection or 360° field like the screenshot where the corner are out of valid range.
For small field the menu View - Position do the job.

- Need to set resolution for selected print area, not just 72 dpi. Need best resolution as possible.
Just set the bitmap width and height 4 time greater. Bitmap dpi is just a default information that can be overridden when printing.

- Need print animation feature
Use the menu Setup / Date-time / Animation
Even if you not make the animation automatically with ffmpeg you find all the jpeg frames in C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Local\Skychart\tmp\

- Also need one button to set the most accurate naked eye view possible
This is too specific and almost every people will have a different view of what "naked eye view " is. Set the parameter you want and save the chart setting with File / Save as...
