| Summary | 0000438: shychart home user directory should be .skychart instead of cartes_du_ciel | ||||
| Description | Hi, I have installed SkyChart v3 beta 0.1.4 on Ubuntu 8.10 by using the following tutorial: http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/documentation/installation_on_linux_debian As I see Skychart installes data files into /usr/share/apps/skychart/ which is OK, but what bothers me is /home/[user]/cartes_du_ciel directory. Why? When I uninstall skychart from Linux except that uninstall would remove all skychart program files and left behind my personal settings files. Uninstall does exactly what I have written. But when I tried to remove "skychart" files there was no directory of files with "skychart" that I have been expecting. But now I know there is /home/[user]/cartes_du_ciel directory and /home/[user]/.cartesduciel.ini file that I have to delete if I decide to remove skychart program. What is my suggestion? I suggest you to use /home/[user]/.skychart directory instead of /home/[user]/cartes_du_ciel and put file /home/[user]/.cartesduciel.ini (probably even better to use skychart.ini instead) inside of .skychart directory. So deleting .skychart directory would delete all personal data for this program. | ||||

Hi, I just forget to write arguments why? 1. I would expect if program name is skychart that there is .skychart directory (argument written in previous post) 2. Directory starting with dot (.) is hidden, so no bother to see settings file in my Terminal or GUI window manager tool 3. Other project use the same dot (.) principle, for example Firefox uses .mozilla directory as user's sub home directory. Deleting .mozilla deletes all personal settings, extensions etc for particular user. Regards |

I agree with that. Similarly this directory must be put in $APPDATA on Windows instead of My Documents. This is not a big programming change but it need to migrate actual user data and remove the old folder to avoid any confusion. On the same occasion I will move the Linux install directory from usr/share/apps/skychart/ to usr/share/skychart/, apps is used by kde applications. |

This is implemented by revision 1182 to 1185: http://svn.origo.ethz.ch/viewvc/skychart?view=rev&revision=1182 I not implemented the migration of old user data because there is too much risk to do that automatically. The release notes will explain the change and give tips to copy the old files. This is the thing you can do when still in beta ;-) |
