Summary0000954: Map scroll bars problem
DescriptionI think there is a problem with the world map scroll bars.

If I click once (either one of the arrows at the end, or the space between the "handle" and the arrows) the map starts to scroll without stopping until I click again.

This is not the normal behavior of scroll bars, where you need to keep pressed for continuous movement. A single click should produce just a step displacement (small or large, depending on the clicking point).
Additional InformationI know that the world map is intended as just a roughindication. Yet, you may wish to correct this at some point. If it's not by design, I mean...

I have checked the same SVN version 2143 in my other computer and the scroll bars behave as expected, without problems.

System with the problem: Notebook Dell, Windows 7 Home Premium 64
System without problem: User built desktop, Windows 7 Utimate 64.

Should I check anything else?

Hi Guillermo,

I checked the problem yesterday and I found it not occur every time. I need a few more testing to decide if I make a correction right now or wait for the next version.

From my testing the problem is when you keep the mouse pointer at the scrollbar extremity. Can you confirm that?

Hil. I don't have the notebook here so I'm checking with the desktop machine. As I said before the behavior is different, but I now see that THERE IS some problem. It's very subtle, so let me be as clear as possible.

I don't know the standard Windows' names for these things, so let us define them first: The scroll bar has a "handle" which serves the double purpose of scrolling (when "grabbed") and showing the overall position of the map in the window. At both extremities of the bar there are two square "arrow" buttons (normally greyed, they turn into shaded buttons when mous is over). The rest of the bar is also clickable so let us call it the "bar". I have the map dialog open and zoom on the map. Some zoom, it doesn't matter how much. "Single click" is a normal left click and release with the left button. "Long click" is a click-hold for something like half a second and release with the left button.

1. Single click on arrow: small scroll.

2. Single click on bar: long scroll.

1. and 2. are as expected. Those are the ones that failed in the notebook, keeping on the movement after the single click.

3. Long click on arrow: repeated small scrolls. It is as if the "arrow button" keeps pressed. When I move away the pointer, the movement stops. But the button remains "shadede". If I place the pointer again over the arrow (without clicking!) the movement resumes. Movement stops if I click again.

4. Long click on bar: same as 3, only that long scrolls.

3. and 4. are weird. They do not seem completely wrong, but I believe it's not a standard sroll bar behavior. None of my text or image editors, or viewers, or browsers, do it. All of them have no particular behavior after a long click.

As I said the behavior in the notebook was (I believe) slightly different.

Let me know if you need some specification of the system.

Guillermo

PS: By the way, when comming and going to and from Cartes while writting this, I noted two other problems:

A. Cartes disappears from the ALT-TAB list when the map dialog is open.

B. If you click on Cartes when the map dialog is open, the map goes behind. With the usual position the map remains completely hidden, so Cartes becomes unresponsive, nothing works because the map is still open, you can't even exit and must kill the program from the tasks manager. Of course, is you can still see the map (because you moved it to a side of Cartes main window, for example) you can click again on the map and resume control. The same happens with all the other configuration dialogs. This is a MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM than the scrolling, in my opinion.

Back at home with the noteblook. I have checked that a SINGLE click on the arrows triggers a non-stop scroll until I move the pointer away (in which case the scroll resumes if I move the pointer again over the arrow) or click again.

Besides, the other problem: configuration dialogs that jump behind the main window, is not present. I get an audible indication and nothing bad happens. I don't know, perhaps an interaction with some other running program at my desktop at the lab.

Yet, Cartes still disappears form the ALT-TAB list when a configuration dialog is open.

Cheers.

Guillermo,
I confirm the problem with the world map scrollbar. I also tested on Win98 and the problem is the same.
But I not find a "quick and easy" fix, so I prefer to report the fix after the release of 3.6.

The problem with ALt-Tab is only when using a Win 7 theme (basic or Aero). There is now problem when using the "Windows classic" theme.

I can never make a configuration dialog to disappear behind the main window.
This is normally not possible because the main window is unresponsive when a configuration dialog is open, so it cannot go on top.
This is interesting if you can find what is different on the desktop.

It was an interference with the program Active Multiple Desktops, which manages my second monitor. I stopped it and the problem disappeared. It's a very small compatibility issue, I say now.

Alt-Tab: Indeed, I am using the Aero theme in both machines. Again, very small issue. And the Win-Tab (the 3D flip effect of Aero) works with a configuration dialog open! Excellent!

OK, congratulations on 3.5 then!

(I have a feature request for later...)
